The Reality of Sin
Recognize: Sin is breaking God's commandments and rebellion against God. Sin is putting ourselves in the place of God.
Colossians 3:5-6 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience.
Recognize: The reality of sin in our lives
1John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Fact: Our sin separates us from God
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Fact: Doing good things will not get us into heaven
Titus 3:5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Fact: Satan has blinded the minds of unbelievers
2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world (Satan) hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Who Will Go to Hell?
Recognize: Hell is very real.
Hell does exist, it is real.
Billy Graham said, “God will never send anybody to hell. If man goes to hell, he goes by his own free choice.” God sent His son to die on the cross for you as atonement for your sin. People may joke around and state they want to go to hell to be with their friends but put the joking aside and consider the realness of hell. Two aspects of hell are troublesome to me. One, hell is a lake of fire and two, it is forever. The second aspect should grip our soul. Honestly, I have a difficultly understanding the depth and impact of “forever”.
Give your heart to Jesus now to escape the judgment of God. The fear of hell itself should give you reason enough to trust in Jesus.
The Bible tells of a true story about Lazarus in Luke 16:23-24 “And in hell he [the rich man] lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeing Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.”
Recognize: We will one day stand before God
The Bible states that every person will one day stand before God and God will look to see if their name is written in the Book of Life. If their name is not there they will spend the rest of their life in a horrifying place absent from God.
Revelation 20:12-15 states “And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
Romans 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
Fact: The wrath of God is coming
2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
Hebrews 9:27 And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes the judgment.
Action: Repent and ask Jesus to forgive you of your sins
Repentance means turning from our sinful life and turning to God.
I Thessalonians 1:9 says "...how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God".
1 John 1:9 says "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".
Acts 3:19 says "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord".
Luke 13:3 says "I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish".
2 Corinthians 7:10 says "For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death".
Recognize: God’s remedy - God sent his Son to die on the cross for us
1 Peter 2:24 says "And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed".
John 3:16-17 says "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."
Hebrews 9:22 says "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins".
Recognize: We are saved by the faith in Jesus and not by any good things we have done.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast".
Fact: Jesus is the only way to heaven. There is no other.
Jesus says in John 14:6"I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father but through me".
Acts 4:12 says "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved".
Fact: God’s plan for salvation is by the cross. This may seem foolish to us but God is greater than us.
1 Corinthians 1:18, 29-30 says "For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God…so that no man may boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption".
Recognize: Jesus was raised from the dead so we could be saved
I Corinthians 15:3-4 says "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures".
Romans 10:9 says "That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved".
Romans 6:4 says "Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life".
Fact: Eternal life comes through Jesus
Jesus said to Martha inJohn 11: 25-26“I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”
John 10:27-29 states“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”
Invite Jesus into Your Life
Action: Invite Jesus into your life
John 1:12 says "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name".
Romans 10:10 says "For with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation".
Revelation 3:20 says "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me".
Prayer of commitment:
“Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. Right now I repent from my sins and I believe you died for my sins. I receive you as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart and my life.”
