Revelation 9 in Bible Prophecy

Revelation 9 in Bible Prophecy – The fifth and Sixth Trumpets

Fifth Trumpet
Bottomless Pit Opened
Revelation 9:1-11

9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.Revelation 9
9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
9:4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
9:5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
9:7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

Angel Given the Key to the Bottomless Pit
The fifth angel sounds the trumpet and the fifth trumpet judgment begins. An angel (star) falls from heaven to earth. This angel is given the key to the bottomless pit. This angel may be Satan himself who is thrown to earth in Revelation 12:12-17.

“Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” (Revelation 12:12-17)

The angel unlocks the pit and smoke comes out. The bottomless pit is likely the middle of the earth where hell or Sheol is located.

Satan Falls from heaven
Luke tells us that Jesus watches Satan fall from heaven with lightning.

“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” (Luke 10:17-18)

Jesus tells us again in the gospel of John that the prince or ruler of this world will be cast out of heaven. He is cast out of heaven to judge the world in the end times.

“Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.” (John 12:30-31)

Satan can only fall from heaven one time and he is currently in heaven accusing the believers before the throne. “Today Satan has access to the thone of God but one day He will be thown from heaven.

“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” (Revelation 12:10)

Isaiah also speaks of this same future event when Satan (Lucifer) falls from heaven.

“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12)

Locust come out from the pit
Smoke comes from the pit and locust come out from the smoke. A picture is described of the locust.

  • Power is given to them to sting like scorpions, yet they only have power to sting those without the seal of God on their foreheads.
  • They torment men for five months but do not kill them.
  • They look like horses.
  • They move together in battle formation.
  • Something like crowns of gold are on their heads.
  • They have faces like men.
  • They have hair as long as a woman’s hair
  • Their teeth are like lions teeth.
  • They have iron breastplates.
  • They are equipped with wings which sound like many horses rushing to battle.

What are the locust? The locust are not the typical locust which eat grass but may be a picture of a demonic entity released from the pit of hell to torment those on the earth. The locust do not have power to touch those with the seal of God on their foreheads.  If the locusts are demons then  the demons do not have power over those with the seal of God. In Revelation 7:4 and Revelation 14:1-5 we learn the 144,000 are sealed with the name of God the Father written on their foreheads.  These men are off limits to the locust.
If the saints are on the earth during this time are they are off limits to the locust? Not sure. It would seem those with the Spirit of God being sealed by the Holy Spirit would also be off limits to the locust.

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.” (Ephesians 1:13)

Is this the Army of Locust defined in Joel?
The army described in the book of Joel does fit some of same description described in Revelation 9. The locust in Joel devour everything in their path.

“What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; and what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; and what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten (Joel 1:4 NASB).

“A fire consumes before them, and behind them a flame burns. The land is like the garden of Eden before them but a desolate wilderness behind them, and nothing at all escapes them” (Joel 2:3 NASB).

“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.” (Joel 2:25).

Joel’s army is described as the following (some points of Joel’s description):

  • Mighty and without number (Joel 1:6, 2:2)
  • Teeth are like that of a lion (Joel 1:6)
  • Fire consumes before them and flame burns behind them (Joel 2:3)
  • Appearance like that of war horses (Joel 2:4)
  • They leap on tops of mountains (Joel 2:5)
  • They march in line and do not break rank (Joel 2:7)

Joel’s army is not likely the locust from the bottomless pit in the fifth trumpet judgment. It may be the 200 million man army described in the sixth trumpet judgment.

The King of the Bottomless Pit
In verse 11 the locust are ruled by a king which came from the bottomless pit. His name is Abaddon or Apollyon in Greek. Both words mean “destroyer” or “destruction.”  This king may likely be the Antichrist spoken of in Revelation  11 and 17.

“The beast that comes out of the bottomless pit” (Revelation 11:7)
“The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the bottomless pit and go to destruction.” (Revelation 17:8)

Start of the Great Tribulation
If the angel which fell from heaven and given the key to the bottomless pit is Satan then this judgment occurs near the start of the great tribulation.  Satan is given three and one-half years to persecute Israel (Revelation 12:13) and the saints (Revelation 13:7).

First Woe Is Past

Fifth Trumpet Judgment is complete
Revelation 9:12

9:12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

The first woe is past. The first woe is the fifth trumpet judgment. This woe did not kill the wicked but two more woes are coming with the power to kill. The angels announces a total of three woes and one has passed.  To those without Jesus and without the seal of God this second woe is avoidable. Get right with God. Judgment is coming to those without the Lord. Don’t take the mark of the beast on your forehead, take the seal of God on your forehead.

Sixth Trumpet
200 Million man Army
Revelation 9:13-21

9:13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
9:14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
9:15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
9:16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.
9:17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.
9:18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
9:19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.
9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

The Golden Altar
The sixth angel sounds the trumpet and the sixth trumpet judgment begins. A voice comes from the golden altar which is before the throne of God. This is where the souls of those slain are located in Revelation 6:9-10. This also is where an angel offered prayers of the saints in Revelation 8:3.

“And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.” (Revelation 8:3)

We don’t know the identify of the voice from the altar. The voice does command the sixth angel to release four angels from the River Euphrates.

The Four Angels
The four angels which were bound at the river Euphrates are loosed. The four angels must be fallen angels because only fallen angels must be restrained. These angels are prepared for an hour, a day, a month and a  year to kill one-third all of mankind. God is specifying the exact time this judgment is to take place, yet only He knows when it will happen. It takes place after the fifth judgment. The four angels somehow control the gathering of 200 million horsemen.

Large Army gathered
A large army of horses and riders 200 million in number have gathered for this judgment. These are not real horses with riders upon them.  The horses have heads which look like lions and fire and brimstone come out from their mouths. The power of this mechanized weapon is in its mouth and tail. This army may be the image of gun-fitted helicopters, army tanks or some form of modern weaponry  This army may be the same army as described in the book of Joel. The army in Joel has super human capability.  They’re appearance is as war horses with flames of fire. Before them the earth quakes and the heavens tremble.

“The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief.  The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble.” (Joel 2:4-10)

Timing of the Battle
The battle will likely take place at the end of the Great Tribulation. This war which kills one-third of all mankind may be the same war as described in Revelation 16:13-16 as the sixth bowl of wrath and also called the War of Armageddon.

“And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.” (Revelation 16:13-16)

Yet even though one-third of mankind is destroyed, those left behind do not repent and turn to Jesus.
