The Antichrist Given Power and Authority from Satan
13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
The Beast from the Sea
A Beast rises up out of the sea. It has seven heads and ten horns. Each of the seven heads has the name of blasphemy and on each horn is a crown. The Beast, in this passage, probably refers to a entire kingdom rather than to a person. As we learned earlier, the term beast may also refer to a man. The Beast who comes out of the abyss or bottomless pit in Revelation 11:7, Revelation 17:8 and Revelation 9:11 is the person or demon of the Antichrist.
“And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.” (Revelation 11:7)
“The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.” (Revelation 17:8)
“And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.” (Revelation 9:11)
The Kingdom of the Antichrist has Seven Heads
The kingdom of the Antichrist has seven heads.
“The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits (Revelation 17:9 NASB).
There is some discussion as to the meaning of the seven heads. The best understanding is the seven heads are seven kingdoms. Revelation 17 speaks of Babylon and the seven heads.
“And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space. And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.” (Revelation 17:7-13)
The seven kingdoms are listed below. Five are dominant empires of the past. Rome was in power when John wrote the book of Revelation. After the Roman Empire collapsed the Holy Roman Empire ruled from the Vatican.
- Egypt – fallen
- Assyria – fallen
- Babylon – fallen (lion)
- Medo-Persia – fallen (bear)
- Greece – fallen (leopard)
- Rome – existed during John’s lifetime
- European Union, United Nations or some confederation or league of nations- not yet come
Description of the Beast
The kingdom of the Antichrist is now described by animal-like features. The kingdom of the Beast is like a leopard, identifying the past empire of Greece; its feet like a bear, identifying the past empire of Medo-Persia; and its mouth as a lion, identifying the past empire of Babylon. These are the same animals as described in Daniel 7. The kingdom of the Beast is likely referring to the last of the seven empires. The empire morphs into the United Nations or the European Union and will eventually be ruled by the Antichrist. The women who rides the Beast is likely the Holy Roman Empire or the Vatican.
Why is the Antichrist called a Beast?
The Greek word for “beast” is thērion. The word can mean a “wild animal or beast” or a “brutal, bestial savage man.” One wonders if the Antichrist is part human, part demon and maybe part animal as described of the giants or Nephilim in Genesis 6: 1-4.
One of the Kingdoms is Killed
The seven heads are the seven kingdoms as described above. We are currently in the time period of the sixth head or sixth kingdom. One of the seven heads (kingdoms) is wounded to death and the deadly wound is healed. All the world wonders. One of the kingdoms is destroyed and revived again. This means one of the first five kingdoms must be revived. The third kingdom was the kingdom of Babylon. Is this the kingdom to be restored?
The Ten Horns Refer to Ten Kings
The Beast has ten horns with crowns on the horns. We know the ten horns refer to ten kings,
“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour. These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast” (Revelation 17:12-13 NASB).
The Antichrist gives authority to ten kings for a short time before He takes over the entire kingdom. These ten kings rule over ten areas of the world. One wonders how the world will be divided into ten governed areas.
Satan’s Restraint is Removed and He Gives Power to the Antichrist
The Dragon (Satan) is unleashed on the earth in his full wrath. Satan gives the Beast power, a throne, and great authority. The Beast rules over all the nations and peoples and demands to be worshiped. He declares war on Christians and overcomes them. Those whose names are written in the Book of Life, who won’t take the mark of the beast, will be searched out and killed.
The Antichrist Rules with Great Power for 3 1/2 Years
The crowd cries “Who is like unto the Beast? Who is able to make war with him? The Beast boasts of great things, speaks against the God of heaven, against the temple of God and against heavenly realm. He rules for 42 months (three and one-half years) before God brings an end to the kingdom.
In verse 10 we read, those who lead others into captivity will themselves go into captivity. Those who kill with the sword will themselves be killed with the sword. This is where the saints are distinguished. The saints will endure with patience and faith in the Lord. Whether they live or die, they will be obedient the Word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ.
The False Prophet Exercises the Authority of the Antichrist
13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
The False Prophet Comes Up Out of the Earth
Another Beast comes up out of the earth. This Beast is the False Prophet spoken of in Revelation 16:13.
“And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.” (Revelation 16:13)
The false prophet comes from the earth whereas the Antichrist comes from the bottomless pit (Revelation 11:7) and the sea (Revelation 13:1). The False Prophet has two horns like a lamb meaning he is gentle yet he speaks as a dragon. The person of the Beast (Antichrist) is the leader of the kingdom of the Beast (United Nation, European Union and eventually the kingdom of the Antichrist). The False Prophet is a religious leader and is the head of Babylon (woman, mother of harlots, Vatican or Holy Roman Empire). Thus the woman (Vatican) rides the beast (European Union).
The False Prophet Has Power Like the Antichrist
The False Prophet’s power is like the power of the Antichrist. The False Prophet calls all who live on the earth to worship the Antichrist. He performs miracles and makes fire come down from heaven in order to deceive men. He builds an image of the beast and gives life to the image so that the image is able to speak and kill those who do not worship the image of the Beast. With today’s technology one can imagine a large projected digital image given life through voice and computer animation or even a powerful, life-like robot.
The Mark of the Beast
The False Prophet commands everyone to put a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads. No one is able to purchase without this mark. The number of the mark is “666”. Advancements in technology and data security are bringing us close to the point where everyone on earth will be identified by a unique number. To secure this number and one’s financial information, a credit card will no longer be reliable, it must be embedded by computer chip onto each person.
