It’s one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time, and now 1993’s “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell is stunning people once again as secret Bible messages embedded in the film are finally coming to light.
One longtime Christian broadcaster is admitting he’s stunned at how many themes from Scripture are portrayed not only in that film, but others as well.
“I’m shocked,” exclaimed Pastor Dan Catlin, host of “Messiah’s Branch Prophecy Hour” on the American Voice Radio Network, as he interviewed Joe Kovacs, author of the brand-new best-seller “Shocked by the Bible 2” about how God is broadcasting the good news in clandestine fashion in some of the most popular movies ever to hit the silver screen.
During the program, Kovacs explained that virtually all of “Groundhog Day” is voicing numerous messages from the Bible, especially how people full of sinful thoughts and actions can repent of their wrongdoing, learn how to follow a godly way of life and end up with true love, being married to our Producer, who has paid the ultimate price to redeem them from the prison of death so they can live eternally.
“This movie,” said Kovacs, “is one of the greatest analogies for the Bible.”

“It stars Bill Murray as a TV weatherman who’s just basically a jackass. He’s really filled with himself and his arrogance and nobody really likes him because he’s crude and he’s rude.”
At one point in the story, Murray’s character Phil arrogantly announces: “I’m not gonna live by their rules anymore.”

Kovacs explained in simple terms how the motion picture’s plot mirrors God instructions to stop our sinful ways to come to inherit eternal life:
“In the movie, he’s reliving the same day over and over which is Groundhog Day which is February 2nd. He’s basically dwelling in his sins that whole time. But he finally learns [that] to get love in his life – and he’s attracted to his producer played by Andie MacDowell – he has to become the better man. And so every day he learns how to reject his asinine way of living and become a more godly man where he helps old ladies change their tires, and he saves somebody from choking at dinner … and he rescues a child from falling out of a tree. He does all these good deeds to help him become a better person.

“By the end of the movie, we see an auction taking place, and his own producer buys him, redeems him by spending every last cent in the checking account to buy him at auction. Well what does that remind you of? That reminds us, of course, of Jesus, the Producer, by the way – just like Rita is the producer of Bill Murray’s character in ‘Groundhog Day’ – the Producer spends every single cent … to buy back, to redeem what was once an awful character to be part of the end-time love story, the marriage, if you will. And it implies at the end of the movie that Bill Murray marries Andie MacDowell and they say, ‘Let’s live here.’ And that’s the message of the Bible, ‘Let’s live,’ like live eternally.”
In a scene from 1993’s ‘Groundhog Day,’ Andie MacDowell, the producer of TV weatherman Phil Connors, spends every last cent in her banking account to purchase her loved one. In the Bible, the Producer of all things, Jesus Christ, paid the highest possible price to purchase, or redeem, His loved ones.
“He starts off as this wicked character in the movie but he learns that to win love, true love, which in the Bible of course is joining ourselves to God, he has to reject the evil, repent of his wicked ways, his rebellion against God, his rebellion against everything that is moral and decent, and become the better man. At the end of the of the movie, his producer buys him, redeems him … and he’s freed from his prison of reliving the same day over and over to have a glorious life of love with his producer.”
After reading “Shocked by the Bible 2” and hearing the movie analysis by Kovacs, Pastor Catlin declared: “I’m shocked by you right now.”
“I’ve watched [that movie]. I’m a Bill Murray fan,” Catlin continued, “and I read the Bible over and over and study it, and I live a biblical life, I believe. But I never saw [the messages from God] in the movie. You give such a great insight that most people don’t read into things. Maybe you should just write a book or a guideline book on how to look at movies. It would be a wonderful thing.”
Kovacs actually dedicates an entire chapter of “Shocked by the Bible 2” to many movies with secret biblical messages without overtly mentioning the Bible. Among the Hollywood productions Kovacs analyzes are “The Matrix,” “Star Wars,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Big Short,” “Blade Runner,” “Blast from the Past,” “The Truman Show,” “The Island,” “The Rock,” “Knowing,” “The Walking Dead” and others.
Kovacs and Catlin also discussed hidden scriptural themes inside 1971’s “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” as the candyman Wonka, who represents Jesus as the maker of all things good, is testing the moral character of each child to see who is filled with good traits and who is filled with bad traits.
Those filled with bad traits, such as the obnoxious British girl Veruca Salt, plunge to the furnace, just as unrepentant evildoers in the Bible are headed for fiery destruction in an end-time furnace.
But for those who do repent, like Charlie Bucket does in “Willy Wonka,” the reward is to be elevated to a high position and inherit “all things” from the Maker of all things, as evinced in the Bible.
“At no time do these famous titles directly state, ‘Get Jesus and get saved,’ and if they did, they probably would not have become such smashes,” Kovacs said. “But God has found a way to get inside the minds of writers and directors to embed strong biblical messages and scriptural themes to which the producers themselves are likely oblivious.”
In this latest work, which is a sequel to his No. 1 Amazon best-seller “Shocked by the Bible” from 2008, Kovacs digs much deeper into the Good Book, connecting the dots from hundreds of Scriptures, many of which are rarely, if ever, discussed in public. He cracks the window into the spirit dimension by revealing not just the physical meaning of any given verse, but the spiritual meaning as well.
